SB10 PASSED 61 Vote Yes for Equal Marriage!

SB10 PASSED 61 vote Yes!

The March on Springfield for Marriage Equality will take place on October 22, 2013, the scheduled first day of the fall veto session of the Illinois State Legislature. The "March on Springfield" is part of a broad grassroots strategy to secure final passage of Illinois Senate Bill 10, the "Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act" already approved by the Illinois Senate and with Governor Pat Quinn's support. Once adopted, Illinois will become the 14th state, plus the District of Columbia, to treat all of its citizens equally under state marriage laws.

(ASL interpreters will be provided at the Rally and March.)

Why Equal Marriage in Illinois?

Illinois couples are treated differently and unfairly from their fellow citizens in Illinois and throughout the United States.

•    Civil Unions:   (From Illinois Unites for Equal Marriage): In spite of granting basic state-level legal recognition to committed same-sex relationships, civil unions constitute a second-class status when compared with civil marriage. Click Here for examples of the many differences.
•    Religious Freedom:   Many, many people of faith support equal marriage. Nevertheless, not all support our cause and so the Religious Act protects freedom of religion and would not require any faith institution to perform a union with which it disagrees.
•    DOMA:   The Supreme Court recently nullified section 3 of DOMA giving married same-sex couples in 13 other states and the District of Columbia access to the federal rights of mixed-sex married couples. Illinois residents cannot access those rights fully since Illinois doesn't recognize same-sex 'marriage'.
•    Illinois Voters:   By a huge majority (50/29) Illinoisans support equal marriage. Crain's/Ipsos Poll.
